Description
In the Gardens of Versailles, the Grove of The Collonade holds a sculpture placed in 1696. The Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto is the depiction of the Greek myth where Cupid makes Pluto fall in love with Proserpine, the daughter of Jupiter and Ceres. He takes her away to the underworld which makes her mother sad. Her father, Jupiter then orders her to return every six months. Thus, this explains the reason for the seasons as her mother Ceres, the Goddess of Agriculture, alternates between sadness and joy when her daughter returns.
